“NHS estate is in dire condition and harming patient care”

On this occasion the title of this article is not me blustering on about the state of the NHS estate but comes directly from the title of a British Medical Journal article published six days ago. The article focuses in on a survey from almost 500 BMA members, which states that 43% of its respondents believe “the condition of their workplace has a negative impact on patient care” (1).

While the focus from the BMJ and its members on the state of the healing environment is great, five years ago in 2017 the BMJ warned that “at what point does the cost of not maintaining buildings and equipment directly affect the safety and protection of patients and staff?” (2).

Surely the real question will be what will the BMJ be saying in the NHS in 5 years time?
